Kate Spade's Stationary - Obsession!

If there is one thing I love as much as fashion, it would be stationary. Every time I walk into a bookstore or papery shop, I can spend hours admiring the beautiful paper, expertly bounded notebooks, and cool notepads. Unfortunately, most of us have stopped using paper and pens and simply jot down lists on our smart phones. We even stopped taking the time to hand write cards and thank you notes and prefer to send e-cards instead :(

My favourite thing is when fashion designers create Stationary lines - they are always so covetable! On my recent trip to Canada, I fell in love with Kate Spade's new stationary line and party decorations. Everything is stripped or dotted and is SUPER cute and swoon-worthy. So much that I am looking forward to throwing my next party with these accessories :)

These would look amazing in a b-day party, bridal or baby shower

To add spice to your drinks and cocktails

So much cuter than using regular paper clips!

Louis Vuitton's new W Bag

Actress Michelle Williams is the face of Louis Vuitton's FW 2013 handbags

Louis Vuitton has released a new IT bag for Fall 2013 that I am lusting after - the W Bag! It is practical to be carried everyday as it fits tons of stuff, but is also elegant enough to be carried for casual nights out. It is made primarily from soft calf cashmere leather and has 3 interior pockets for your everyday essentials.

The W bag has a dual-material design. It is classic Louis Vuitton but cooler and fresher with a twist on the well-known monogram. This IT bag has already been seen on the arms of many super fashionable celebrities.

It comes in two sizes - the PM (33 cm wide) and the GM (40 cm wide) and five super stylish colour combinations. I especially love the yellow one carried by Michelle Williams above. The W bag is being released in the Fall of 2013 and will be on sale in stores starting September.

I'm OBSESSED with this bag- The W must stand for WOW!

Get the Look for MUCH Less - Floral Shades!

It's sunny almost everyday during the summer months so why restrict yourself to one pair of sunglasses? Have fun with them and incorporate them into your outfits - buy a pair for the beach, one in every color for your outfits, and one really nice pair for special occasions. Get them in different shapes and sizes. There is no need for your shades to be expensive - choose ones that are fun, affordable and colorful. I like TOPSHOP and H&M's selections best.

Floral sunglasses were all over the catwalk this season, led by Dolce & Gabbana with the coolest pair. Here is a GREAT Get the Look for Less which will let you follow the trend without even denting your savings :)

Get the Look for MUCH Less!

Duffle Bags are a very popular bag trend for Fall/Winter 2013. Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, Furla, and Louis Vuitton have all sent models down their runways carrying duffles.

I found this amazing duffle at ZARA at a fraction of the cost and is a great alternative to the expensive brands. It is available in a stunning blue, black or beige/black combo, and will make a great day bag this summer and fall :)

How to wear Floral Headbands

Celebrities in their floral headbands
Clockwise from top left: Kirsten Dunst, Lana Del Rey, Alex Chung, Keira Knightley

I'm currently OBSESSING over floral headbands. They have been worn by every single celebrity on the planet and are the accessory of choice for summer vacations and music festivals. This season, the trend is to wear your floral headband like an actual headband on top of your head and not as a halo like a bridesmaid. They are available in all sizes and it's up to you to choose how big you want to go. Nothing screams Boho-chic quite like these headbands.

How to wear floral headbands:  Expect to look a little 'cuter' than you usually do as they are fun and playful. Complete the look with a flowy dress or top. Don't wear anything too rigid. I think they look best with hair parted in the middle and pushed back away from the hairline. Let some hair show between the headband and your face (like all of the celebrities in the above picture.

If you want to make a statement on your holidays this summer, this is THE trend to be sporting! Just choose your favourite flower and colour and you're set :)

Here are a few floral headbands I Love

A selection at S*uce Boutique in the U.A.E

You can even wear it slightly to the side like this one and not necessarily in the center of your head

These are only $4.80 (AED 18) -
Buy them in all three colours to match with all your clothes this season!

This floral head wrap is smaller and more subtle than the others and is less 'Look at Me' than the others. Wear it like a headband and not as shown in the pic

Will you be wearing a floral headband this summer??

ABSOLUTE Madness!

So I was browsing a website called The Editorialist (link) which sells really cool accessories and I came across this diamond necklace.

It's a nice necklace and is designed by a finalist of the CDFA/VOGUE Fashion Fund- Jennifer Fischer. Then I looked at the price tag and FREAKED!! It is $250,000!!!

Apparently this necklace was designed for the Tiffany Design Challenge under the guidance of Anna Wintour. It is 18 carat gold and has 20.35 carat diamonds. No description of what kind of diamonds they are, their clarity, if they are certified - NOTHING! Also, to make matters worse - the necklace is on a drawing of a model and not a real person so there is no way of knowing how it looks worn in reality!

I shop online quite a lot but I would never spend this amount of money simply by clicking a button and entering my credit card details. IF you could buy such a necklace, wouldn't you need to try it on and love it? How crazy would it be to receive a $250,000 package from the Aramex guy? Finally, if your credit card had such a large limit - would you actually put its details online for all kinds of hackers and thieves to steal it?

I am really interested in your thoughts on this.... is it just me or is this ABSOLUTE MADNESS? Should there be a limit to how much we can spend on items online?

Up Close & Personal: Sarah Beydoun of Sarah's Bag

I love fashion but also feel very strongly about helping the poor and underprivileged and being charitable to them. Sarah Beydoun, founder of Sarah's Bag, has found a way to combine  these two opposing loves to create a brand of stunning handbags and accessories, while at the same time benefitting the underprivileged. Her items are made by artisans who  happen to be prisoners and ex-prisoners from Lebanese jails.

Sarah & I at her stand at Beirut Art Beat
Sarah's Bag is now a very well established brand in the Middle East with beautiful bags which are each a piece of art. Even better, you can feel good about carrying them! I met up with Sarah at Beirut Art Beat and asked her a few questions about her brand.
Here is my interview with a truly inspiring designer:

Tell me about Sarah's Bag?
I am the Creative Director and Founder of Sarah’s Bag. After studying sociology at the American University of Beirut, I got master's degree from the Université Saint Joseph where I wrote my thesis on prostitution in Lebanon. I launched Sarah’s Bag soon after graduation and my first collection was a set of 12 handbags made by prisoners in Baabda prison that I sold at a craft fair in downtown Beirut.

I then opened my atelier in Beirut in 2000. It brought together my love of design and fashion with my desire to work with underprivileged women. Today over 150 artisans form the backbone of Sarah's Bag.  We focused on bringing Middle Eastern pop culture into the mainstream, and on reviving and reinventing the region's rich traditions of craftsmanship, embroidery, crocheting and textile making.

Tell me about the women and prisoners who work for Sarah's  Bag?
Our bags and accessories are designed around the skills of the prisoners and ex- prisoners that we have personally trained and worked with for the past thirteen years. The designs incorporate techniques we’ve taught them and we are always to looking to expand their repertoire. A lot of the women we work with were prisoners when they started with us, and many continued to work with us after they served their sentences.

Each one of them has a different story to tell, but they all had to overcome very difficult circumstances, both inside and outside prison. A lot of them had to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities while facing the stigma of being ex-prisoners. I am especially proud of some of our artisans who trained women and girls
from their villages and became heads of small Sarah’s Bag teams.

How has your brand evolved over time?
We started in the Middle East and built up a strong clientele in Lebanon and the rest of the Arab world. Arab women love buying handbags that are stylish, culturally relevant to them, while at the same time benefitting underprivileged women in their society. We then started to expand and sell internationally.

Do your bags change each season or do they carry over?
We have signature pieces that are inspired by Lebanese pop culture and textile traditions, the golden age of Egyptian cinema, and Arabic poetry. These are our classics, but the bulk of the bags do change each season. We choose a theme based on textile traditions of other cultures like Africa and Central Asia and base a whole collection on it.

(A typical Sarah's Bag inspired by Egyptian Cinema)

Which is your favourite bag from this season?
Whatever I am working on right now is the piece I love. Right now the focus of my obsession is on our latest bag collection, Summer Blues, which is beaded and very brightly colored: colors that make me happy and make me think of summer such as turquoise, cobalt blue, coral, sunshine yellow.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the first ever Sarah’s Bag: it’s small and has a pink rose sequined onto a black background. I had it framed and it hangs in my office.

1st ever Sarah's Bag made for Sarah's mom

Have you expanded your product offering?
Yes, we also sell accessories, headpieces,  scarves, kaftans, IPAD covers, laptop bags and home accessories. (All of these items can be found on Sarahsbag.com)

Where in the U.A.E can my readers buy your bags? Online?
You can find Sarah’s Bag at O’de Rose on Al Wasl Road, Boom and Mellow in Mall of The Emirates and Sauce Boutique at Dubai Mall. Online, at our eshop shop.sarahsbag.com

To read stories of some of the prisoners who work for Sarah's Bag, go to www.sarahsbag.com and click 'Our Artisans' at the bottom. The stories are truly inspiring. They make me in awe of Sarah Beydoun for helping these women find their way back into the world while at the same time, creating a fashion brand that rocks!

Up Close & Personal: Roxana from SunglassCurator.com

It is ALWAYS sunny in the U.A.E and you need to wear sunglasses no matter what the season. I usually only buy 2 pairs of sunglasses a year- one for Spring/Summer and one for Autumn/Winter and I don't experiment with the style. If I find a pair that suit my face, I'll buy  similar ones for the next season. However, I have recently realized that sunglasses are just as much an accessory as jewellery, shoes or bags. A funky pair can be a topic of conversation and can really get you noticed! I discovered that some people even buy 3 to 4 pairs a season depending on their outfit and the occasion.

I came across the Sunglasses Curator (www.sunglasscurator.com), a website based out of Bucharest which sells really cool designer shades for both men and women. They sell limited edition, hard to find, designer brands, and truly exceptional pieces for people who have a deep appreciation of sunglasses. For the rest of us, they offer tips on which styles will suit your face, the trends of the season, look books, and what the celebrities are currently wearing to help you make an informed decision. Basically, they are your one-stop shop for all things sunglasses!

I sat down with one of the owners of the website, Roxana Marcu, to find out what really goes on behind the scenes at the Sunglasscurator.com

Tell me a little about your website
SunglassCurator.com was born out of pure love for fashion in general and sunglasses in particular. Ever since I can remember, I have adored sunglasses as they are definitely one of the most important and impactful fashion accessories that one can wear. They create mystery while also talking discreetly about one’s personality. We wanted to create an online destination where people who share the same love for sunglasses can find a truly exceptional selection of exclusive designer eyewear. We launched our online store in June 2012 and we have a showroom here in Bucharest, where we are based.

What was your inspiration to start a website dedicated to sunglasses?
It has always been very challenging for me to find the perfect pair of sunglasses. I always knew that I wanted to help people find the perfect pair :)

How do you select the designers you will stock?
Our decision is based on the brand image, character of designs and ability to deliver high-quality products. With an ever-growing list of potential collaborating brands, we strive on creating a rather eclectic mix of designers from eyewear pioneers to very-recently launched ones.

Sunglasses are very hard to buy in person and I usually have to try on many pairs before I find the perfect one. Being an online site, how do you deal with this issue?
We rely on having well-informed customers who know the shape and styles of sunglasses that suit them. As online shoppers ourselves, we went through similar situations, so we provide our customers with as much information as possible. We categorize our shades based on size and shape to make it easier to search through the styles which will suit your face. If they still don't fit, you can return them till you find the perfect pair!

USHER wearing DITA Eyewear sold on the website

Your website is very different from the average online retail seller. You have interviews with the designers of your sunglasses, style trends of the season, etc. Do you feel this makes your image more of a sunglasses EXPERT rather than a regular retailer?
Every single frame in our store is 'handpicked' by our team of curators who are always on the lookout for models that have something special. We want people to fall in love with our frames, the same way we do. It is very important for us that our clients have all the information on hand when choosing a frame such as: a guide on what shapes of sunglasses are suitable for his/her face, information on the designer, the current fashion trends, what people that they admire wear etc.

What are the trends for Spring/Summer 2013?

The main trends are below. Read more about them here

Coloured frames - mainly in pink & Geometric frames - round and square shapes

Decorated and printed frames & Classic shapes - cat eyes, aviators and oversized

Minimal eyewear

Do you ship internationally? What is your return policy like?
Yes we ship globally and since our launch, we have had orders from 4 different continents, with some excellent delivery times, if I may add :)  Our return policy is standard and in line with all major online retailers.

Which shades are you personally coveting from the website this season?
I love every single pair on the website but considering that I am a huge fan of oversized sunglasses, these are my favourite:

This is truly an exquisite piece with its oversized butterfly shape and python wrapped frames

These frames will enhance any look instantly with their delicate and unique baroque details

RITA ORA wearing the MOO Noir Desire 2

I love the colour and shape of these frames

These are both romantic and glamourous!
